“The Radical Listener” with Lawrence English
As part of Robot Festival we host a workshop with Lawrence English, a field recording artist known internationally, who also runs the experimental music label Room40. Over many years, Lawrence has worked extensively in field recording, traveling across the globe -from Antarctica to the Australian outback, the Amazon, and Japan. His recordings reflect a highly personal approach shaped by technical practice, theoretical inquiry, and aesthetic concerns.
“The Radical Listener” is a workshop that shares Lawrence English’s unique methodology. He will introduce participants to the field recording techniques he uses in his practice, as well as specific ways of listening developed through his creative process.
The program begins with an approximately one-hour lecture, followed by a listening walk around the surrounding area. Participants will walk together with Lawrence English, listening attentively, recording sounds, and reflecting on the experience afterward.
This workshop has been presented worldwide at venues and institutions such as Fulcrum Arts’ AxS (Los Angeles), Unsound (Kraków), Brown University (Rhode Island), gnration (Braga), and Vancouver New Music. It has also been delivered in lecture format at the University of Porto (Portugal) and Harvard University (Boston). This will be its first presentation in Italy.
Participants of all levels -from beginners to experienced practitioners- are welcome. Participants will have to bring a portable recording device (smartphone, IC recorder, field recorder, etc.). It is recommended that participants wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking, and bring water.
Buying the ticket for the masterclass will also grant access to ROBOT Festival at Bastardini on October 8, where Lawrence English will perform.
